It has never been a secret that Black Label Society is by far one of my all time favorite bands, in fact a day doesn’t go by that I don’t listen to at least one song of theirs to keep the blood flowing & to help get through the day.
Zakk Wylde takes the time to speak with me on an annual basis about what is going on, what is coming up and to always and I do mean ALWAYS make me laugh my ass off! If music didn’t work out as his career, comedy would certainly be an excellent back up plan!
My good friend John JD DeServio is always a call or text away as well & can give substance to an interview like the best of them. JD has been with Black Label Society for more years than I can count and has always been open about each tour and experience. He is not only the bass player, he is a key factor in the production of the oh so awesome albums along side of the one and only Zakk Wylde.
Coming off a short vacation, and of course the birth of his Son Sabbath, Zakk took my call and we had one of our every so entertaining talks.
TFL: Hey Zakk! How’s it going buddy?
ZW: It’s good doll, what are you doing?
TFL: Sadly my friend, I am watching the snow fall out there (sigh)
ZW: No shit, already?
TFL: What would ever posses you to come to Canada in the late fall? (laughing)
ZW: Well you know we like to think we’re Vikings! (laughs)
TFL: Well congratulations to you and your lovely wife Barbaranne on Sabbath Page!
ZW: Well Thank You very much!
TFL: He’s very cute, I love the picture of him yawning and you screaming in the background
ZW: Yeah, he’s a great little guy!
TFL: So no new album, when can we see a new album from you guys?
ZW: Yeah, we’ve been out on this one for the past 2 years, so we’ll be out on our Canadian Crusade and South American Crusade then we will take a very quick break to do our ‘Unblackend’ DVD in January.
ZW: So that’s the game plan right now
TFL: I’ve always seen your show in Calgary, however I got quite the promotion and I now live with a few hundred thousand people as opposed to 1.3 million so I’m still having a bit of culture shock!
TFL: So I will be seeing your show in Saskatoon this time
ZW: very cool!
TFL: I’m actually bringing the Vice President of our company with me to the show, I have managed to turn him into quite the Bezerker you know!
ZW: laughs, that is very cool!
TFL: Gotta show him what it’s all about buddy!
ZW: Very cool! Well you know it’s just a good family entertainment! We’ll shoot some Heroin, maybe get locked up on the way to the show and get a bite to eat – you know! (Laughs)
TFL: So are we seeing the classic set list or are you going to shake things up a bit?
ZW: Obviously there will be the stock tunes right that we gotta play, but we are going to dig some others out this time too.
TFL: Good! You bringing the piano?
ZW: Of course!
TFL: Excellent! Didn’t see it when you were touring with Priest but I figured being an opener it was a little hard to do.
ZW: Yeah, you know when you only got like a 50 minute set or if you get an hour especially with Judas Priest, unless we’re headlining you can’t break out the piano. It would be like GNR back in the day when they only got like an hour, breaking out November Rain wouldn’t work.
TFL: And how was Priest? I mean Rob is always a great guy to be around.
ZW: Yeah the Priest guys I’ve been so fortunate the past year or so, it’s always great seeing the play. It was definitely an honor being with those guys.
TFL: I’ve read your book, simply fantastic!
ZW: There’s some comedy right there!
TFL: I can’t thank you enough Zakk, I know you don’t have much time this time around because you just finished your vacation and the Canadian tour begins right away. I look forward to seeing you in just a few short weeks, travel safe and see ya soon!
ZW: Thanks doll & see you real soon!
If the opportunity ever arises to talk with Zakk, TAKE IT! It will be a conversation that you will never forget! His sense of humor reminds me of George Carlin!
After I spoke with Zakk, I sent an email off to JD to see if he had some time to kick in a few extras for me and as always, he obliged with some time the very next day. I grabbed a drink, went into my home office and gave him a call at home.
JD: Hey Tracy!
TFL: Hey! How’s it going JD?
JD: Good! How are you?
TFL: Good! Totally stoked to see you guys!
JD: Ahh right on!
TFL: So I left the big cowtown now I’m in about a 1/4 of the population I used to be in. (laughing)
JD: where are you?
JD: Oh my gosh!
TFL: (laughing) That’s putting it mildly! So are you excited for the Canada tour?
JD: I would be more but I am at the beginning of remodelling my home. We just demo’d pretty much everything and I’m doing an addition and a couple of pop outs that are 7’x15′ so the back hoe was here today…it’s just insane!
TFL: So when you guys doing a new album? You haven’t released one here for a couple of years now.
JD: We’re doing some acoustic thing then maybe a new record next year. You know, I don’t even know…I am just assuming we usually do them towards the end of the year or at the beginning of the year so I don’t know which way they are going to go.
TFL: Now Zakk mentioned you guys have a DVD coming out too?
JD: Yeah we’re going to do this ‘Unblackened” you know that’s going to be fun. We’re going to do that in January.
TFL: I heard there may be a few surprises with the set this time?
JD: Yeah we’re going back and doing a couple of old songs so people should be psyched. I’ve been playing these songs for fucking ever, I don’t even know any more (chuckles) as soon as I’m in front of the crowd it’s fucking awesome but as far as I know these songs in my sleep, backwards and forwards. I could play them on piano, you know whatever flute, fucking tuba you know what I mean? (laughs)
TFL: Yeah (laughing) is there one in particular you do look forward to playing?
JD: Ah, the last song of the night. (laughs) Cause then I get to get away from Zakk, so it’s pretty much my favorite song.
TFL: (laughing) ahhh JD…you kill me.
JD: Stillborn, that’s the favorite one
Ironically enough, it’s one of my favorite tracks as well. Black Label Society is starting their tour on the East Coast of Canada and working their way West over October. BEZERKERS! Get your tickets and get your ass to the show, the guys have a killer set ready for us all and will crank it up all night!
HORNS UP to Black Label Society for always taking the time to speak with Backstage Live Magazine.
